All too often when you are diagnosed with a serious illness, it seems challenging, if not impossible to have an identity beyond that of “patient”.  If that strikes a chord for you, this web site can help.  “Not Just A Patient” is dedicated to providing resources to assist individuals with chronic and life-threatening illness to develop a sense of well-being and to create quality in the life they now have.  This is no small task but it is possible.

There is no single "right" way to heal.  Take time to discover your own path.

Relax. Finding emotional calm at the same time your body is challenging you requires a number of things.  The first is that you develop some techniques that help you relax when you get stressed or worried or are in pain.  There is no single “right” way to do this.  You might find that mediation, relaxation, breathing techniques, imagery or yoga works for you.  Whichever you chose, you have to practice so that it becomes a part of you and you can readily access the technique when you need it.

Take an active role in your own care. Explore how to be invoved in the practical aspects of your physical care. This includes:

Find the support YOU need. The amount and type of support you need in your life will vary based on the impact of your illness and your personal preferences, both of which can change as your situation changes.  Support may come from a spouse, a friend, a church member, someone from a support group or a pet.

Sounds easy, but of course, it is not.  Explore healing that works for you and discover how to have a life, so that you are Not Just a Patient.
